Doom Eternal is undoubtedly one of the best shooters I have ever played. For the context, I have been a fan of FPS for over twenty years. There are countless franchises that I like, many of whom prospered this generation, but none has seized my worship like Doom. Eternal is a design masterclass and succeeds beyond the 2016 restart in every way. Here are twelve things that I absolutely like in the game.
Like creative director Hugo Martin describes it, Eternal's fight is no different from a hardcore and fast chess. The arenas are designed to maximize your arsenal of tools and capacities. A strategy is necessary to exploit enemy weaknesses and maintain your ammunition, your health and your armor to survive action. The meetings require all your attention and are each time exhilarating, because the battles are frantic, and the victory lies in your choice and your precision at all times.
Due to enemy conceptions and a constant shortage of ammunition, health or armor, the use of all weapons at your disposal is essential. The plasma rifle erases the shields, the sticky bombs of the combat rifle and the precision bolts of the heavy cannon destroy enemy weapons, and the chaingun and the ballist quickly treat the heavy, to name a few. The rot of flames makes the armor of the demons bleed, the chainsaw reconstructs ammunition, the glory killed ensure health and the two types of grenade are useful in different situations. Although the runes are more subjective, they also play an important role in the conquest of each arena. There is never a boring moment because Eternal practically forces you to use all weapons during each fight.
From hell to earth to the royal architecture of Sentinel Prime, the mission environments are magnificent, but their conceptions in terms of gameplay are much more impressive, especially when they are stacked against the predecessor of Eternal. The combat arenas are equipped with monkey bars, boosters and teleporters, who accentuate the remarkably fluid crossing of the game and allow you to better develop your combat strategy. Some arenas present environmental risks which inflict another layer of difficulty. In addition to combat and enemy conceptions, diversity is also highlighted in each combat arena that you meet, because there is no defined formula that works for each scenario.
Although terrifying by a voracious desire to kill yourself, you cannot help but love demons. Visually, they are fun to look before decaputing, dismembering and tearing the eyes. I am a big fan of arachnotrons, elemental bread and ghosts. Beyond their heartbreaking appearances, each demon challenges you in a unique way between the way they move and attack.
